Mirae Aerosystems, located in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, a mecca for Korea’s advanced aerospace industry, specializes in manufacturing and assembling key aircraft components, expanding its business realm to pioneer global markets. We had a valuable chance to have an interview with Kim Tae-hyung, president and CEO of Mirae Aerosystems. He told us the development direction of Korea’s aviation parts and machine tools manufacturing industry below:

Mirae Aerosystems’ main business is the manufacture and assembly of Airbus components and horizontal/vertical safety valves for Boeing B737, the best-sellingairplane in the world. It has expanded its business capability from aviation parts manufacture and assembly to ultra-high-precision machining. In particular, Mirae Aerosystems has given top priority to ensuring the highest product quality that can flawlessly meet quickly changing market needs. The aviation parts manufacturing industry requires a strict safety management system. In case issues are raised, we should be able to track the whole process to identify the root causes and take corrective measures, thereby requiring very reliable machining processes. Moreover, to satisfy weight reduction requirements, we also need to pay more attention to high-precision step grinding technologies for hard-to-cut aviation components that take a long time to manufacture.

In order to meet such needs, we have used Doosan equipment to ensure high-precision machining and top quality. Doosan’s VC630/5AX is used to manufacture our small and mid-sized aviation components (parts for civil aircraft landing gears and choppers). Aviation parts manufacturers have mainly relied on local machine tools, of which Doosan’s VC630/5AX have been the most widely applied machine to produce small and mid-sized products. This clearly demonstrates Doosan’s technological prowess. Aviation parts manufacturing requires state-of-the-art high-precision machining technologies. This is why it is dubbed ‘the flower of manufacturing.’ Therefore, machine tools for producing aviation components are deemed to be technologically very advanced.

However, machine tool makers need to do more to meet market needs. For example, a lack of 5-axis machines that can manufacture various sizes of products can be raised as an issue. The size of aviation parts varies from several centimeters to meters, requiring machines that can fulfill such needs. However, the market demand has not been high enough to lead machine tool makers to develop more 5-axis machines and diverse sizes of machine tools.

Pointing out such a reality, Mirae Aerosystems CEO Kim Tae-hyung said, “Doosan has solidified its position as the number one 3-axis turning center maker in the market. In case it can add various 5-axis machines to its product lineup, Doosan will be able to contribute to further developing the aviation parts manufacturing industry and machine tools technologies.” If so, what is the future of our aviation parts manufacturing industry? CEO Kim offered a positive outlook. “Korea’s aviation parts production industry is highly competitive in quality, delivery and price, based on its technological prowess and advanced infrastructure. Of course, China is a big rival but Korea outperforms its largest neighbor in technology, price, and reliability, having a greater potential for future growth..

Moreover, taking into account the huge growth potential of the industry, the machine tools industry is also expected to further expand in both quality and quantity. If the US decides to purchase T50 in large quantity, the demand for machine tools may skyrocket. Considering that as many products as machine tools currently in operation should be additionally manufactured, its growth potential is considered to be great.”
